Ogier Jersey continued its support of the green management of La Hougue Bie on Tuesday, 10 March by helping to rebuild the replica ‘neolithic hut’ so enjoyed by the island’s school children and other visitors to the Jersey Heritage site.
The team of ten had a lesson in wattle and daubing by Peter Roberts, site guardian, who used locally sourced hazel to weave the new back wall of the hut.
He stated: "I've worked with the team from Ogier for just over a year now and they are a hard working bunch - willing to get their hands dirty and muck in with the care for this ancient site. The Neolithic hut has been in need of repair for a number of years and the team from Ogier have helped us to restore and improve it ready for the upcoming summer season. Having the team onsite it a real benefit to me."
The volunteers also cleared large areas of brambles to help prepare the site in advance of its opening on 6 April 2009 and will continue with additional on site projects throughout the year.
Head of Marketing, Communications and Fundraising at Jersey Heritage, Helen Gray, said: "I'm so pleased to be working in partnership with Ogier again this year. Their green management of La Hougue Bie has inspired Jersey Heritage and we are continuing to improve sustainability at all of our sites throughout 2009. We're always delighted when we have help on site with specific projects like this, not only does it mean we get willing volunteers to help us build, improve and renovate but it also means that a new group of people come and create a special connection with the site."
