Each year, Ogier awards a small number of bursaries to students who are embarking on a career in Law in order to assist them with their legal studies. The firm is represented in both Jersey and Guernsey and offers bursaries to students from both islands. The scheme is only open to Channel Islands residents.
Our Bursary award is for the duration of an individual's legal studies and consists of:
- Financial support payable in quarterly instalments directly to your bank account
- Preferential consideration for work placements at Ogier
- Invitations to various social events organised by Ogier
- Use of the firm’s library and information services when in Jersey, including the study area
- Careers advice from Partners and other lawyers
- Book vouchers worth £200
The academic requirement for acceptance onto our scheme is one A grade and two B grades at ‘A’ level or higher (or the equivalent in UCAS points), excluding General Studies. If you are successful at interview we will then issue an offer which is conditional upon you achieving the above grades. Regarding studies, the courses that qualify are LLB Law at University or a joint Law degree. Other studies such as CPE, LPC and Bar Vocational Courses are also eligible.
In addition to the academic requirements, we are looking for students who possess the competencies that we believe are important in driving our business forward. Attributes such as interpersonal and communication skills, as well as initiative and the motivation to succeed, are key to us.
Following success in obtaining a degree in Law, the bursary will continue to be paid during any subsequent courses to qualify as a Solicitor or Barrister. However, the bursary will not be paid if you take a year out at any time. We expect students to carry out a paid work placement of one month’s duration during July, August or September during which time students will gain valuable experience.
Applications for the bursary scheme are invited from ‘A’ level students in the January, February and March preceding the ‘A’ level exams. However, in some cases we do accept applications from local students already at University or undertaking LPC / Bar School studies during this same period. Unfortunately, applications cannot be accepted prior to 1st January of the relevant year and the online application process will close at the end of March. Applications for our 2010 Bursary Scheme have now closed.
The standard of applicants has historically been very high and we ensure that every applicant is given equal opportunity. If we progress an application, the next stage is to invite the applicant for interview. This interview will normally be conducted by one of our senior lawyers and a representative from the HR department. Successful applicants will be informed by the end of April giving you the peace of mind that you will not only be receiving financial support but also mentoring from talented individuals during the course of your studies.
We think our bursary scheme is an excellent opportunity and, whilst we do not have a long list of conditions that must be followed, we do ask that if a bursary is accepted from us then no other bursary is accepted from any other firm / organisation. We also ask that you perform to the best of your abilities during our placements so that both you and Ogier gain the most from this long-term relationship.
We are a very friendly, forward-thinking firm and maintain exceptionally good relationships with our bursaries.
