The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The BVI is a collection of up to 60 islands, cays and islets. Located 60 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico in the north-eastern Caribbean, the BVI is made up of four main islands; Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke, Anegada and Tortola, which is the main island and where the capital, Road Town, is located.

The population of the islands is 22,016 (according to a 2006 census). The islands are multicultural, with many different nationalities from all over the world living and working in the BVI.

The key pillars of the BVI’s economy are the Financial Services Sector and the Tourism Industry, both of which make the BVI one of the more flourishing economies within the Caribbean.

There are a number of state schools and three private schools catering from the age of 3 up to 18 years on the island of Tortola, as well as a local college. There is sound healthcare provision in the BVI through government funded and private clinics.

The BVI enjoys a sub-tropical climate ranging from 25°C in winter to 29°C in summer. The cooling trade winds moderate the temperature and have helped the Islands become known as “the Sailing Capital of the World”.
