Trainee Solicitors

Ogier operates an England and Wales Trainee Solicitor programme, taking a number of Trainees onto the programme each year in Jersey and Guernsey.  The programme is only open to Channel Island residents holding local or 5 years residency in Jersey or being a qualified resident in Guernsey.

Operating to the standards set by The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the training contract provides Trainees the opportunity to develop their understanding of legal practice and of the responsibilities to be taken on when qualifying as a Solicitor.

The 2 year training contract is based on rotations in different departments which are known as “seats”.  Each seat will be for a period of three, six or nine months.  On these seats Trainees will learn about a number of practice areas within Ogier.

Ogier specialise in the following work areas:

  • Banking
  • Corporate and Commercial
  • Employee Benefits
  • Employment
  • Investment Funds
  • Litigation
  • Private Client and Trusts
  • Property
  • Real Estate
  • Restructuring and insolvency
  • International Finance

Progress will be reviewed at the end of every seat and, if a nine month seat, reviewed after six months.  This gives the Trainee an opportunity to reflect upon their personal development and progress.

Trainees develop their skills in both contentious and non-contentious areas of practice.  Every Trainee will have a three month seat in Litigation as well as two or three seats in our Business Trust Law Group.

Each Trainee will be required to attend the Professional Skills Course. The compulsory element of this course covers financial and business skills, advocacy and client care.  In addition, Trainees are required to attend 4 electives, 3 of which will be chosen by Ogier and the fourth chosen by the Trainee.

Ogier also offers all Trainees the opportunity to take part in the Nottingham Law School Litigation Course.  This course takes place over a period of five days and gives Trainees an opportunity to gain practical experience in contentious work.

Application Process

Applications from students undertaking the LPC are invited in January, February and March of each year.  Successful applicants will then commence their training contract in September.

The academic requirements for acceptance onto our scheme is the current undertaking of the LPC, a 2:1 Degree (non-law degree background welcome) and two A grades and one B grade at ‘A’ level or higher (or the equivalent in UCAS points), excluding General Studies and Physical Education.  If you are successful, we will then issue an offer which is conditional upon you achieving a Distinction or Commendation as a final result for the LPC.

In addition to the academic requirements, we are looking for applicants who possess the competencies that we believe are important in driving our business forward. Attributes such as interpersonal and communication skills, as well as initiative and the motivation to succeed, are key to us.

The standard of applicants has historically been very high and we ensure that every applicant is given equal opportunity. If we progress an application, the next stage is to invite the applicant for interview, with successful applicants being informed by mid May.
