The Ogier Bursary Scheme has been running for 18 years and is continually growing in number as more students are being accepted onto the scheme. Again last year, as in previous years, another of our previous bursary students was successful in becoming an Advocate and we are proud to have helped him in his achievement.
Each year, Ogier awards a small number of bursaries to students who are embarking upon a career in Law in order to assist them with their studies at University. The firm is represented in both Jersey and Guernsey and offers bursaries to both Jersey and Guernsey students. The scheme is only open to Channel Islands residents.
Our Bursary award is for the duration of individuals’ legal studies and consists of:
- Financial support payable in quarterly instalments directly to your bank account
- Preferential consideration for work placements at Ogier
- Invitations to various social events organised by Ogier
- Use of the firm’s library and information services when in Jersey, including the study area
- Careers advice from Partners and other lawyers
- £200 book vouchers
The academic requirement for acceptance onto our scheme is one A grade and two B grades at ‘A’ level or higher, excluding General Studies. If you are successful at interview we will then send a conditional offer – conditional upon achieving the above grades or higher. Regarding studies, the courses that qualify are LLB Law at University or a joint Law degree. Other studies such as CPE, LPC and Bar Vocational Courses are also eligible.
Following success in obtaining a degree in Law, the bursary will continue to be paid during any subsequent courses to qualify as a Solicitor or Barrister. However the bursary will not be paid if you take a year out at any time.
We expect students to carry out a paid work placement of one month’s duration during July, August or September during which one will gain valuable experience. In exceptional circumstances we can be flexible with the arrangements and extra placement requests.
Applications for the bursary scheme are invited from ‘A’ level students in the December preceding the ‘A’ level exams. Therefore we invite applications for the 2009 scheme. However, in some cases we do accept applications from local students already at University or undertaking LPC / Bar School studies.
The standard of applicants has historically been very high and we ensure that every applicant is given equal opportunity. If we progress an application, the next stage is to invite the applicant for interview. This interview will normally be conducted by one of our senior lawyers. There are no strings attached. All we ask is that if a bursary is accepted from us then no other bursary is accepted from any other firm / organisation. We are a very friendly, forward-thinking firm and maintain exceptionally good relationships with all our bursary students. We like to remain in close contact with all our bursary students and ask them to let us know how they are progressing. We also like to celebrate successes and are happy to arrange for the students to see any one of our Partners, should they need any career advice at any time.
