Ogier’s charitable action benefits cancer charity

Article Date - 15/12/2007

Approximately £40,000.00 has been raised by staff and partners at Ogier in Guernsey and Jersey for Channel Island cancer charities. The total has been split equally between Cancer Research UK Jersey and Cancer Research UK Guernsey, giving each charity a donation of £19,116.00.

At the beginning of each year every Ogier employee has the opportunity to nominate a charity for the law firm to support. This is then put to the vote, the winner of which becomes what is known as the “Ogier in Action” charity. The two cancer research charities were the overwhelming favourites to benefit from the Ogier staff’s fund-raising throughout 2006/2007.

All the funds raised by the staff for the nominated charity over the year were then matched by the partners at Ogier to make the final amount.

“We have a core of about a dozen people across the islands who make up our Ogier Charity Action Group committee who co-ordinate the fund raising efforts of each of the Guernsey, and Jersey offices. It was a busy year for us but, when we managed to take into account all the sums raised, we were delighted with the results and are very grateful to the generosity and support of our colleagues and the partners,” said Carole Jehan of the Ogier Charity Action Group.

Everyone at Ogier supports the Charity Action Group in some way. Many members of staff contribute at least £5 per month through the firm’s “300 Club”, each donation buying them the opportunity to win one of five cash prizes.  Additional funds are then raised through extra charity events such as the annual Summer Ball, dress-down days, Christmas raffles, sales of home-grown produce, individual sponsorships, cake sales and bonus ball competitions.

Roger Le Tissier, partner of Ogier, is always impressed by the hard work that is put in by the Ogier Charity Action Group when it comes to fundraising.

“Once again everyone has pulled together to raise an impressive amount for a very deserving charity. Cancer Research UK Guernsey is dedicated to raising funds for research into the cause and best treatment of cancer so I know the £19,000 donation will be gratefully received. We are delighted to be supporting this charity and the fantastic work they do,” he said.

The £19,116.00 cheque was presented by Roger Le Tissier and Carole Jehan to Clare Cairns of Cancer Research UK Guernsey branch, who commented “The staff and partners of Ogier have been most generous in donating their money and time to benefit our cause. I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone concerned - this donation, and all donations that we receive, help to achieve positive steps forward in preventing and treating cancer.”

For 2007, the Guernsey office nominated their chosen charity to be “The Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief”.  An announcement will be made shortly as to how much was raised by Ogier staff in 2007.
