Michael is an experienced employment lawyer in both contentious and non-contentious employment and health and safety matters. He is part of an Employment team that has a reputation for delivering professional yet friendly advice with the ability to translate complex legal material into sound advice. Michael is known for “his depth of knowledge and experience with Channel Island [Employment] law, and Channel Island employment law in particular”. He is also regarded as a noted authority on health and safety matters (Chambers 2015).
Michael advises across a wide range of business sectors which includes Finance, Retail, Energy and Hospitality and Travel. Michael’s clients include Waitrose / John Lewis, for whom he has acted as part of its integration into the Channel Islands 4 years ago and has advised them on an ongoing basis since. Michael advises clients on employment matters generally including those businesses setting up business in the Channel Islands for the first time. He also advises in support of Ogier’s corporate teams as an integral part of commercial transactions. His employment advice also extends to regulatory elements such as data protection, business licencing, the right to work, immigration and housing licences. His clients include Premier Inn / Whitbread, Albert Bartlett, Jersey & Guernsey Gas, CPA Global and Next. Michael also advises many local companies on HR policy as well senior employees on an individual basis that may include employment and regulatory (JFSC) issues.
Michael is also a qualified trainer and delivers employment training.
Michael provides pro bono advice for MIND Jersey and the RNLI (Jersey). Michael was a co- founder of the Jersey Brain Tumour Charity and still maintains a regular role as Trustee and Charity Secretary in the operations of the charity.
In addition Michael was part of the team that provided written advice to the States of Jersey Scrutiny Panel on Family Friendly rights legislation proposed for Jersey.
Michael is an English Solicitor and qualified with Edge & Ellison, in Birmingham. He joined Ogier in 1998 as part of the litigation/regulatory team before developing the Ogier Employment practice on the introduction of the Employment law into Jersey of which he has played an integral part since and particularly since 2008 when he returned to the team after a 5 year internal role as Group HR Director. Michael holds an LLb from Wolverhampton University (part time) and a MSc in Human Resource Management & Business from Aston University Business School, Birmingham (part time). Before his career in law Michael was a member of the West Midlands Police from 1975 to 1990.
