Trainee Opportunities

Ogier is one of the few Channel Island firms that operate a structured England and Wales Trainee Solicitor programme, taking a number of Trainees onto the programme each year in Jersey.

We support our lawyers to qualify as local advocates and encourage employees to take the local advocacy exams. We also comply fully with the legal requirements for continuing professional development (CPD).

We know that investing in emerging talent is investing in our future leaders.

We're always looking for people who fit in with the Ogier vision - driven and innovative; ambitious and technically strong.

We provide future stars with the training to Be Extraordinary.

Each year in Jersey we take on students to our structured England & Wales Trainee Solicitor programme, which is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the equivalent of those run by City law firms.

With a development platform that allows you to track your own progress, you'll be able to take control and make a career that's as unique as you are.

Ogier. The support to be extraordinary.

Trainee Solicitors

We operate a structured England and Wales Trainee Solicitor programme with an intake each year in Jersey.

Operating to the standards set by The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the training contract provides our Trainees with the opportunity to develop their understanding of legal practice, together with an insight into their futures as Solicitors.

Training contracts are based on rotations in different departments, which are known as “seats”. Each seat will be for a period of three, six or nine months.  On these seats you will learn about a number of practice areas within Ogier.

Ogier specialises in the following work areas:

  • Banking
  • Corporate
  • Employment
  • Investment Funds
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Private Wealth
  • Property
  • Real Estate
  • Restructuring and insolvency

With regular updates and a formal  review at the end of every seat you'll have an opportunity to reflect upon your personal development and progress.  We have a fully interactive learning management platform, allowing you control to track your performance as you go.

Our Trainees develop their skills in both contentious and non-contentious areas of practice. Every Trainee has a three month seat in Litigation as well as two or three seats in our Business Trust Law Group.

As part of your programme, you will be required to attend the Professional Skills Course. The compulsory element of this course covers financial and business skills, advocacy and client care.  In addition, everyone is required to attend four electives, three of which will be chosen by Ogier and the fourth chosen by the you.

We are committed to developing our Trainees to be extraordinary future Solicitors and will support trainees through external and supplementary courses where needed.

Application Process

We are looking for the very best trainees to join us: the next generation of our firm must be collaborative and tech-savvy with strong academic achievement, and ready to drive our business forward.

Applications are invited from students currently in their final year of a Law degree, or undertaking their GDL or LPC.  We will also welcome applications from individuals who have recently completed their LPC. The academic requirements for acceptance onto our England & Wales Trainee Solicitor programme are:

  • Commendation or Distinction in your LPC
  • Commendation or Distinction in your GDL (if relevant)
  • 2:1 Degree (non-law degree background welcome)
  • Two A grades and one B grade at A-Level (or the equivalent in UCAS points)

If your initial application stands out, you will be progressed to the interview stage.  All interviews are conducted in person or via remote conference with our Training Principal.  We also have recruitment assessments that everyone undertakes.  Simple, transparent, to the point.

If you are successful, we will then issue an offer which (where applicable) is conditional upon you achieving a Commendation or Distinction as a final result for the LPC.

The application process for the Trainee Solicitor Programme in Jersey is currently closed and will open again in October 2019.

Bursary scheme – Guernsey and Jersey*

*The scheme is only open to Channel Islands residents.

We offer bursaries to students from both Guernsey and Jersey each year.

Our Bursary award is for the duration of an individual's relevant studies and consists of:

  • Financial support in quarterly instalments
  • Guaranteed work placements at Ogier
  • Invitations to social events at Ogier
  • Use of Ogier’s library and information services
  • Careers advice from partners and other lawyers
  • Book vouchers worth £200

Applications for our Bursary scheme are invited from students due to sit their A-Levels in the summer preceding entry onto the scheme, together with students already at university or undertaking GDL / LPC / Bar School studies.  Bursaries are provided in line with the academic year.

The academic requirements for our scheme are:

  • Two A grades and one B grade at A-Level or higher (or the equivalent in UCAS points), excluding General Studies
  • 2:1 classification of degree or above
  • Minimum of a Commendation at GDL level

If you are successful at interview we will issue an offer conditional on you achieving the above grades.  We are committed to supporting focused undergraduates or GDL, LPC and BPTC students.

Solid, competitive academics are required for acceptance onto our Summer Internship but we’re not just looking for grades. We want to hear from people who stand out for their ability to work in teams, with a positive approach to problem solving and clear communication skills.
Following success in obtaining one qualification (for example, your LLB or GDL), the bursary will continue to be paid during any further courses required to qualify as a Solicitor or Barrister.

However, the bursary will not be paid if you take a year out at any time.  We expect students to maintain our academic minimum requirements throughout their studies and to complete work experience placements with us, which generally equate to a minimum of two weeks across an academic year.

We think our bursary scheme is an excellent opportunity and, while we do not have a long list of conditions that must be followed, we do ask that if a bursary is accepted from us then no other bursary is accepted from any other firm/organisation. You'll also need to perform to the best of your abilities during our placements so that both you and Ogier gain the most from this long-term relationship.

Ogier is also one of the few Channel Islands firms to offer a structured, England & Wales Solicitor Training Contract, which is fully regulated by the SRA. Many of our Bursary students go on to secure Training Contracts with us in Jersey or Guernsey and complete their England & Wales Solicitor qualifications with us.

Bursary applications

The application window for the Bursary Scheme in Jersey and Guernsey has now closed. We will be accepting applications for entry on to the 2020 Bursary Scheme from October 2019.

The standard of applicants each year is very high and we ensure that every applicant is given equal opportunity. Interviews will normally be organised during March/April and conducted by one of our senior lawyers or partners and a representative from the HR department.

Please note that all applications will be collated and reviewed after the closing date. We will respond to applicants after this time. Should you require any further information in advance of this date, please contact us at

Living and Working in Jersey

Jersey is the most southerly of the British Isles, is just 12 miles from France, and has a population of around 95,000.

Jersey’s success as an international finance centre has come from its combination of stability and reliability, and the Island’s status as a Crown Dependency gives it constitutional rights of self-government and judicial independence.

It has a highly-regarded health service and an excellent education system. With opportunities starting at nursery and continuing through to retirement, Jersey has a strong commitment to encouraging constant learning and potential. Numerous states-funded and private schools provide this ethic which is reflected in league tables comparative to those of the UK.

The Island’s varied coastline, from the rugged north to the windswept south, is surrounded by one of the highest tidal flows in the world, making Jersey a hub for sea life. Certain areas in the Island and its surroundings have been designated world heritage sites.

Ogier has active sports and social committees through which our staff get involved in a wide range of activities.

You are never more than 15 minutes from the coast and the Island’s varied landscape provides the perfect environment for a range of leisure pursuits. From surfing to golf, and petanque to rugby, Jersey is a regular competitor on the European stage and prides itself on its community spirited enthusiasm.

Together with Jersey’s buoyant industries, healthy lifestyle and high standards of living, it is a unique and remarkable place to live.
