Ogier helps Jersey Heritage tell "Stories from the Sea" this half term

Adventurous tales from Jersey's maritime history will be brought to life over half term, along with the story of one of the most famous ships of all time, the Titanic.

Sponsored by Ogier, Stories from the Sea, or "D’s Histouaithes dé la Mé" in Jèrriais, will be taking place daily at the Maritime Museum between Monday 31 May and Sunday 6 June 2021.

Edward Mackereth, Ogier’s Global Managing Partner, said: “This year, we are continuing our commitment to education and learning by sponsoring the Jersey Heritage event programme. Stories from the Sea is a new experience for Jersey families to discover the Island’s links with the sea. Ogier’s support helps Jersey Heritage to develop interactive learning about Jersey’s maritime history and we are delighted that they are able to host this family fun event for free, for everyone to enjoy.”

Over the course of the week, John Henry Falle – otherwise known as The Story Beast – will be spinning yarns about everything from shipwrecks and saints to black dogs and conger eels, all interwoven with easy Jèrriais phrases and expressions. The storytelling takes place throughout each day and is included in the Maritime Museum admission price, so is free to Jersey Heritage Members and children under six.

As part of the week-long, maritime-themed event, visitors can also immerse themselves in the 360 "Video Dome" film, The Night of the Titanic. The family-friendly film will be taking over the Occupation Tapestry Gallery and is being screened in partnership with the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It allows viewers to experience what it was like to stand on the deck of the ocean liner on the night she sank and looks at the unique conditions that, coupled with human error, led to the tragedy.

Like the storytelling, the film is included in the Museum admission price but tickets to view it must be booked in advance on Eventbrite due to official restrictions on numbers as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Nicky Lucas, Jersey Heritage’s Events Curator, said: “Tide and time have shaped Jersey’s history over the centuries, which means there is plenty of material for The Story Beast to choose from. He’s quite a character and we’re sure he’s going to have his audiences enthralled with maritime mystery and magic for our Stories from the Sea event over half-term. The film about the Titanic also promises to be an experience not to be missed. It’s the first time we have used the Occupation Tapestry Gallery for a 360 Video Dome film and we hope families enjoy immersing themselves in the story of what happened to the famous ocean liner.”
