At Ogier, we offer more than just a trainee programme – we're fostering an environment where "Always Learning" is part of our DNA.
Your journey to becoming a lawyer is as unique as you are, and our culture is designed to champion individuality and cultivate learning at every stage.
Hear from our own Guernsey based Chloe Gill and Samuel Clarke — once students, now thriving professionals who have embraced our ethos of always learning.
Chloe Gill is an associate in Ogier's Dispute Resolution team in Guernsey. She first joined the firm as a bursary student in 2018, working in both the Corporate and Property teams, before progressing to Ogier's Trainee Solicitor programme in 2020 and completing her training contract to qualify as an English solicitor in September 2022.
Being from Guernsey and considering my future while at university, I was looking for opportunities to develop my career back at home. After participating in Ogier's bursary scheme, it seemed like a natural progression for me. The firm was always very supportive during my time on the scheme, so I knew it would be the same in the next chapter.
You are given a lot of opportunities to interact with the people you work with, and you're also encouraged to go out into the wider community as part of our corporate social responsibility initiatives. Everyone gets two days each year to go out and help within the community. I have also had the pleasure of being part of the committee for Ogier's internal disability network where we are always looking for ways to make the workplace accessible to all and to boost awareness of different needs. No two people are the same and that is celebrated and appreciated at Ogier.
I always knew there were talented and knowledgeable people here, but I was amazed at how much guidance, patience and support I received at Ogier. It's really interesting to get their perspectives and Ogier often brings in external experts to give talks on anything, from legal and financial points of interest to wellbeing and mental health.
Samuel Clarke joined the firm as a trainee solicitor in September 2023.
When I was applying for training contracts, Ogier immediately stood out to me. I was drawn by the prospect of engaging with complex transactions, high quality work and exceptional training. The opportunity to work within smaller teams and collaborate closely with market-leading lawyers who are specialists in their fields was highly appealing. Ogier has an outstanding reputation both on the island and within the legal sector, making training here such an exciting opportunity.
The access I have had to professionals in other jurisdictions has been a highlight. I frequently have the opportunity to work with team members from other offshore jurisdictions like Jersey, the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands. These interactions really make you appreciate the global nature of Ogier and highlight the potential opportunities available to practice in other offshore jurisdictions.
It would probably be the people. There are often negative stereotypes associated with large law firms which can seem intimidating. Transitioning from university, where you might feel like a relatively big fish in a small pond, to working alongside internationally recognised and market-leading lawyers can be daunting. However, I quickly realised that they are just stereotypes. Everyone at Ogier really looks out for you, which fills you with a great deal of confidence in starting your legal career, knowing that the whole firm is pushing for you to succeed.
