A series of fun and creative workshops are being held across Jersey Heritage visitor sites this summer to help keep young islanders entertained and engaged with Jersey's incredible history.
'Creative Summer', sponsored by Ogier, will run for six weeks across the school summer holidays. The family-friendly activities include painting, flag and banner making, wild play in the outdoors, graffiti art and animation. Each week's activity will take place at a different Jersey Heritage visitor site, including Mont Origueil Castle, Elizabeth Castle, La Hougue Bie, Hamptonne Country Life Museum and Jersey Museum.
Kate Kirk, Director of Marketing and Communications at Ogier, said: "Creative Summer is a highlight of the summer holidays. The six-week long programme of activities not only creates interactive learning opportunities but also offers students the chance to explore new forms of creativity – such as creating a surrealist collage animation with sound and images. As a community, we have a rich history and Jersey Heritage are brilliant at helping people of all ages engage with it. We're delighted to continue our sponsorship of Creative Summer as part of the Ogier and Jersey Heritage programme of family fun events and activities, bringing history to life for families."
This year’s artists and experts include The Jersey Showman, artists Kelly Eastwood, Karen Le Roy Harris, Esther Rose Parkes and Katrin Mountain, naturalist Stephen Le Quesne and graffiti artist Stephen Lamb.
Nicky Lucas, Jersey Heritage’s Community Events Curator, said: “We have a host of colourful and fun activities on offer as part of our ‘Creative Summer’ series for youngsters to enjoy at our castles and museums during the school holidays, each one led by talented artists and experts. There is something for everyone, whether they are budding painters, would-be graffiti artists, future animators or simply love being outdoors building dens. Each week of activity is at a different heritage site, which also provides an opportunity for participants to explore and be surrounded by Jersey’s special history, using it to inspire their creative activities.”
Creative Summer events are drop-in activities, all the materials will be provided, and no booking is required. The sessions are suitable for all ages and abilities, but children must be accompanied by an adult. The normal entry fees apply with free entry for Jersey Heritage members and children under the age of six.
The daily drop-in sessions run Monday to Thursday each week, from 11:00 – 15:00.
Mont Orgueil Castle | 21 - 24 July
The Jersey Showman comes to Mont Orgueil Castle for four fun-filled days of action and adventure. Get ready to laugh, play and move as the Castle comes alive with bubbles galore, hoop-tastic fun, and energetic outdoor activity perfect for kids of all ages.
Hamptonne Country Life Museum | 28 - 31 July
Bring your imagination and help artist Kelly Eastwood to transform the music marquee for Jersey Heritage's annual Cider Festival in October into an apple orchard wonderland. Think colourful apples, leaves and beautiful branches on banners that visitors to ‘La Faîs’sie d’Cidre’ will be able to appreciate for years to come.
La Hougue Bie | 4 - 7 August
Wild play days are perfect for connecting with each other and experiencing nature through crafts, skill learning and free play. All sessions will be led and supported by naturalist Stephen Le Quesne – explore, discover, create and breathe under a canopy of trees at La Hougue Bie. Activities will vary daily but themes will include dens and ropes, wood and whittling, natural crafts and the living world.
Elizabeth Castle | 11 - 14 August
Head to Elizabeth Castle for a hands-on community art event like no other with inspirational graffiti artist Stephen Lamb. Whether you’re picking up a spray can for the first time or already know your way around a wall, you’ll be guided through the basics while contributing to a giant collaborative mural. With years of experience working with schools and youth groups, and in community spaces, Stephen’s passion for graffiti as an expressive and inclusive art form is truly infectious.
Jersey Museum | 18 - 21 August
Explore your wildest ideas and let your imagination run free as you play with sound and images to make something totally surreal and original. Create your own surrealist collage animation with sound at Jersey Museum, with the help of artists Karen Le Roy Harris and Esther Rose Parkes. They will turn your creation into a short film for everyone to watch in the Museum’s AV Theatre. No experience needed, just come ready to experiment and have fun.
Elizabeth Castle | 25 - 28 August
Join artist Katrin Mountain for a fun and hands on flag making workshop for all ages at Elizabeth Castle. Inspired by her vibrant flag installation, ‘Blowing Against The Wind’, you’ll explore the Castle’s rich history through stories, symbols, and myths, and then help to design and create brand-new flags to be installed as part of the display. Follow the colourful trail from the Castle’s entrance to the Hermitage and add your own voice to this evolving installation.
