John is a tax partner at Ogier in Ireland and leads the tax practice specialising in investment management, structured finance and aviation.
John is a Fellow Chartered Accountant, a Chartered Tax Adviser and has been awarded an MSc in Aviation Finance from UCD Graduate Business School. A former tax partner of a big 4 accounting firm, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Dublin City University and is a member of the Adjunct Faculty at University College Dublin. John contributes to numerous publications and has lectured on behalf of the Irish Tax Institute and the Law Society of Ireland. He has participated in the committees of several industry bodies including Irish Funds and the Irish Debt Securities Association and is a member of ISTAT.
With more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, John specialises in advising on the accounting, tax and regulatory aspects of asset management. John has acted for a wide range of industry participants, including asset managers, financial institutions, trustees, private equity providers, aviation lessors and fund administrators.
Recent work
John acted as a tax adviser to a leading securitisation vehicle in Ireland and provided advice on the potential impact of investment structures in over 45 countries.
He has provided structuring advice to a Japanese Corporation on the reorganization of an investment of €1 billion into an Irish Aviation Group.
John provided tax advisory services to a listed company on an ongoing basis in particular sidecar tax advice, financing, post-merger tax structuring and reorganisation advice, transfer pricing and tax compliance.
John acted as adviser to a Bank in their successful bid for an aviation leasing platform which included 165 aircraft valued at approximately USD 1.6 billion. The acquisition was completed as a combined asset and share deal involving over 36 jurisdictions.
John has acted as a tax auditor of a fund group with over 235 special purpose vehicles in approximately 35 countries. Due Diligence included jurisdictional analysis and cross-border structuring analysis and review of sale and purchase of investments.
John acted as a lead advisor to an alternative asset manager which invests through three private equity funds. Advice provided included due diligence on the establishment of a worldwide investment platform including assessment of funding structures, CGT risks and fund reporting
