"Liam Murphy was extremely helpful and a safe pair of hands."
Legal 500 UK, 2026
Liam is a counsel in Ogier Guernsey's corporate and funds team. Liam has a broad practice across all aspects of private capital including the formation and regulation of funds, capital deployment, investments, co-investments, GP-led secondary transactions, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory matters.
Background and experience
Liam advises sponsors, institutional investors and family capital on Guernsey structures across corporate vehicles and investment funds, with a particular focus on mandates where corporate execution and fund architecture interact.
His practice covers the structuring, regulation and delivery of private market funds including private equity, venture capital, private investment funds (PIFs) and other alternative investment structures and the deployment of private capital. Liam's practice includes advising on funds formation and regulation, co-investment and consortium arrangements, joint ventures, venture capital investments and management incentive arrangements.
Liam started his career with international firm Cleary Gottlieb in London before joining the London offices of Akin Gump. He brings an investor-informed commercially grounded perspective shaped by time advising within an institutional investor environment (Fidelity International in London) and additional buy-side experience as senior legal counsel to a multi-billion dollar family office in Dubai. He spent time at leading firms in Cayman and Dublin, and having worked within Cayman and Irish transactional environments is well-placed to advise on structuring with cross-border implications and multi-jurisdictional regulatory impacts. Liam has extensive experience advising on equity capital markets transactions (including SPAC and conventional IPOs) as well as general corporate and regulatory matters and maintains an interest in single family office structures.
Liam read law at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2007, and completed his LPC at BBP in London in 2008. Liam, who is half Brazilian, grew up in São Paulo, Brazil and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. Liam is currently reading for the Guernsey Bar Course with a view to qualifying as a Guernsey Advocate during 2026.
