Michael Evans

Michael is counsel in Ogier's Jersey Banking and Finance team, based in the London office.

He specialises in cross-border, leveraged, acquisition, private credit and real estate finance and non-contentious restructuring (including security enforcement) matters. He also regularly advises on Islamic finance, derivatives, structured finance and infrastructure matters.

Michael also advises clients on a range of corporate matters, in particular relating to acquisitions and corporate reorganisations.

Background and experience

Michael has more than 20 years' experience advising international banks, credit funds, sponsors and borrowers across a wide variety of complex cross-border financing transactions across a wide range of asset classes, combining strong technical advice with pragmatism and a no-nonsense approach to focus on what really matters to the client. He has also advised extensively on Sharia-compliant structures and financings and has a particular interest in infrastructure finance and structured finance and derivatives, particularly in relation to netting and set-off.

Recent examples of work include:

• acting for a private equity-backed healthcare group in respect of a corporate reorganisation and group refinancing
• acting for the lenders in respect of the acquisition of 2 UK-based properties and a Jersey Property Unit Trust
• acting for the lenders in respect of the refinancing of the group debt of a global foreign exchange business
• advising the lenders in respect of a debt for equity swap and consensual restructuring and refinancing of a UK based business
• advising the directors of private equity backed Jersey holding companies on directors' duties and solvency issues in a distressed situation.

Michael trained at one of the leading global law firms in London where he qualified into the banking team in 2007 and also worked in Dubai before moving offshore in 2015 and has worked in both Jersey and the Cayman Islands.

Michael is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and a member of the Law Societies of England and Wales, Ireland and Jersey and a member of the City of London Solicitors' Company. He is also recognised as a Key Lawyer for Jersey Banking and Finance by Legal 500.
