Ogier Leman advises Thorntons Recycling on purchase of The City Bin Co

Deal

16 August 2022

Ireland

Ogier Leman has advised Irish waste management operator Thorntons Recycling on its purchase of The City Bin Co, subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

Thorntons Recycling, which employs more than 550 people, is a long-standing client of Ogier Leman, which has assisted the company with a number of acquisitions over the past 10 years.

Ogier Leman’s multi-disciplinary team was led by head of Corporate Dominic Conlon, with head of Real Estate/practice partner John Hogan, partner Andrew Nagle, partner Stephen O’Connor, consultant Laura Holtham and managing associate Mary Gavin. Associates Aaron Kelly, Stephen O'Connor, Marianne Norton and Rachel Devlin, and trainee Chelsey Heaney, also worked on the successful acquisition.

Dominic said: “We are delighted to have advised Thorntons throughout a complex and sometimes challenging competitive acquisition process run by the sellers and their advisors. Congratulations to Paul and Shane Thornton and to Thorntons CEO Gary Brady on bringing Thorntons to the next stage of its growth as one of Ireland's leading waste collection and recycling operators."

Thorntons Recycling has been operating in Ireland’s waste sector for almost 45 years and today handles more than 700,000 tonnes of waste material across 11 depots. Thorntons provides a full range of recycling and waste management services to over 80,000 household and commercial customers. A family-owned waste and recycling operator, Thorntons Recycling has 5,500 commercial and more than 75,000 residential customers.

The City Bin Co was founded in 1997 to bring a customer-centric approach to the waste management industry. The company is headquartered in Galway, in the West of Ireland, and operates in both Galway City and Dublin. In recent years, the company has grown revenues and customer and staff numbers while increasing recycling rates and continuing its relentless pursuit of customer service excellence. Approximately 180 people are employed across its operations.
