Global

Five Ogier lawyers have been recognised in IFLR's Expert Guides – Rising Stars 2022.

Banking and finance partner Kate McCaffrey, restructuring and corporate recovery partner James Angus and private wealth senior associate Katie Baxter from Ogier's Jersey office have been named "Rising Star" alongside banking and finance partner David Nelson and private wealth senior legal manager Grace Gao from Ogier's Hong Kong Office.

The Rising Stars guide represents the brightest and most talented practitioners in business law and related practices, identifying energetic, professional and skilful upcoming talent in their fields.

Ogier's global managing partner, Edward Mackereth, said: "We're delighted to see Kate, James, Katie, David and Grace recognised as Rising Stars in this guide. Their feature is a testament to their hard work and dedication, as well as the strength and talent across our jurisdictions. At Ogier, we focus on building a culture that puts people first, supporting our people to grow in their fields and as leaders."

James Angus is an experienced disputes lawyer and courtroom advocate. He advises, and represents in court, many of the leading trust companies and financial institutions in Jersey. A seasoned litigator in commercial and chancery matters, James has particular specialisms in contentious cross-border estates work and in cross-border insolvency/restructuring and is part of Ogier's multi-disciplinary Restructuring and Corporate Recovery team. James is also one of the UK's and Channel Islands' Top 35 Under 35, earning the title for fifth year in 2022.

Kate McCaffrey is a corporate and banking specialist advising on a wide range of high-value international transactions. She acts for international finance institutions, investors and corporate borrowers in relation to complex, multi-jurisdictional bilateral and syndicated facilities, refinancing, restructuring, insolvency and security enforcement. Kate has significant experience in relation to the financing of investment funds, the real estate finance sector, borrower finance and non-contentious restructuring. She has a strong reputation for her ability to deal with complex transactions and providing succinct, practical commercial legal advice.

David Nelson has extensive experience advising on the BVI and Cayman law aspects of a broad range of debt financing transactions, including leveraged and acquisition finance, fund finance, margin lending, structured finance, real estate finance and secured and unsecured general corporate lending. David also has experience advising on debt and corporate restructurings and is a member of Ogier’s Restructuring and Corporate Recovery group.

Katie Baxter specialises in non-contentious trust and fiduciary law and assists a wide range of professional trustees, family offices and private clients on all issues concerning trusts and foundations, including establishing, restructuring and drafting trusts and foundations and other ancillary documents, as well as advising on structures including employee reward schemes and pensions. Katie's experience also includes the dissolution, reinstatement and migration of Jersey private companies. In 2021, Katie was named Lawyer of the Year in the IFC - Senior/Managing Associate category at the Citywealth Future Leaders awards and, earlier this year, was named one of the UK's top 40 under 40 private client practitioners.

Grace Gao advises international high net worth families and trust companies on all issues concerning private wealth matters, with particular focus on trusts, foundations, international estate succession and asset protection planning, development of family governance structures to facilitate the succession of wealth, wills probate and estate administration. Grace has experience in advising on trusts settled in various major offshore jurisdictions and working with professional advisers in various jurisdictions.
